Some family stories are inseparable from the land where they are being lived. They are written beneath familiar trees, along well-worn pasture paths, and beside the animals that have quietly become part of everyday life. This family is also especially close to my heart. I have had the privilege of photographing them through different seasons, watching their babies grow, change, and become more fully themselves with each passing year. There is something incredibly meaningful about being invited back into a family’s story—not only to document how they look, but to witness the small ways their relationships deepen over time. I am so grateful to know them, to photograph them, and to preserve these chapters as their children grow.

For this Oakdale family session, we photographed their family of five in the place that felt most like them—surrounded by open fields, yellow wildflowers, grazing horses, and the soft warmth of the evening sun. Their two daughters wore simple white dresses and cowboy boots, their blonde hair catching the light as they wandered through the pasture. Their little brother matched his dad in a plaid shirt, jeans, and tiny, well-loved boots that already looked as though they had carried him through plenty of adventures. The horses were already part of their family’s rhythm. They grazed nearby while everyone gathered together, wandered gently through the field, and stood patiently as small arms wrapped around their necks.

One of the girls held tightly to a little brown pony, resting her cheek against its coat as though this was something she had done a hundred times before. Her sister reached toward another horse wearing a pink halter, completely at ease beside an animal so much larger than she was.

These were more than photographs with horses. They were photographs of childhood as these girls knew it—dusty boots, sun-warmed fields, soft noses, and the kind of friendship that forms quietly between a child and an animal. Their little brother brought a different kind of energy to the session. He sat securely in Dad’s arms, the two of them dressed almost alike beneath his father’s black cowboy hat. In another moment, his mother held him close, his worn boots dangling beneath him while the field stretched out behind them.

He may be too young to remember this evening clearly, but one day he will be able to see how naturally he belonged there—held between the people who loved him, surrounded by the life they were building together. There were tender moments between the parents, too.He leaned in to kiss her while she laughed beneath the brim of his hat. Later, they stood together in the golden grass, looking less like two people pausing for a portrait and more like a couple briefly finding one another in the middle of raising three children.

Those moments matter. Family photographs are often centered around the children, but the love that began the family deserves to be remembered as well. The laughter, the familiarity, and the way two people continue choosing one another amid the beautiful fullness of everyday life.

The girls gathered close to their mother in their white dresses. One leaned in to kiss her cheek while she smiled, and for a moment, the entire story of this season seemed to exist inside one frame. A mother still young enough to carry her toddler. Two daughters growing quickly beside her. A father holding steady at the center of it all. And horses grazing peacefully in the background, as familiar to these children as the trees, the pasture, and the evening light. Years from now, the girls may no longer fit into these little white dresses. Their brother’s boots will be far too small. The pony may no longer stand in the same field, and the children may not remember exactly how the warm grass felt beneath their feet. But these photographs will remember for them. They will hold the way their family looked gathered together in the Oakdale countryside—their laughter, their animals, their closeness, and the beautifully ordinary life unfolding around them. And for me, they will also hold the quiet gratitude of getting to witness it all.

Planning a Family Session with Horses in Oakdale

Including horses in a family session creates photographs that feel personal, meaningful, and deeply connected to your family’s real life. The goal is not to make every animal stand perfectly or to force young children into formal poses. The most beautiful images often happen while children are brushing a horse, wrapping their arms around a pony, walking through the pasture, or simply staying close to the animals they love. Neutral clothing, natural fabrics, cowboy boots, and soft coordinating tones photograph beautifully against Oakdale’s golden fields and green countryside. Keeping the wardrobe simple also allows the relationship between your family, your animals, and the landscape to remain at the heart of the photographs.

Most importantly, choose a location where everyone feels comfortable. When children are allowed to move freely and interact naturally, the session becomes less about performing for the camera and more about preserving the life you are already living. I'm comfortable handing large and small animals and love finding creative ways to incorporate your favorite pets in our session.
