Her first summer was beginning beside the ocean. The evening was warm and bright, with sunlight settling across the cliffs and the sound of the waves moving quietly behind them. She was still small enough to disappear into the folds of her mother’s white dress, still new enough that every expression and movement felt like something her parents wanted to study. For this Santa Cruz newborn session, we met at the beach just before sunset and let the evening unfold slowly. Her mother carried her along the water’s edge, dressed in soft white with her baby tucked closely against her chest. There was something beautifully simple about the two of them together—the white fabric moving in the breeze, the baby’s tiny bonnet framing her face, and her mother leaning down again and again to kiss the person she had waited so long to hold. The beach was open and expansive around them, but the photographs felt intimate.

Motherhood has a way of narrowing the world in those first weeks. Life becomes a collection of small rituals: feeding, rocking, studying tiny fingers, and learning the different meanings hidden inside each cry. Even beneath a wide sky and beside an endless ocean, a mother’s attention remains fixed on the baby resting in her arms.

Her father held her against his blue sweater, smiling as he lifted her toward the light. She looked impossibly small beside him, dressed in white while the cliffs and calm water stretched into the distance. These early photographs of a father and his daughter carry their own tenderness. She will not remember the way he looked at her during those first weeks or how carefully his hands supported her. She will not remember being lifted toward the sky or resting against the familiar sound of his voice. But one day, she will be able to see it. She will see how completely she belonged to him from the beginning. Their large white dog joined the family along the shore, standing beside them as naturally as any older sibling might. I love when families include the animals that have already shared so much of their lives. Before there were baby blankets and bassinets, there were walks, routines, and years of companionship. The arrival of a baby does not erase that earlier story—it simply makes room for another chapter. Together, they stood beneath the cliffs with their baby and the dog who had known them before they became parents.

For a moment, their whole life was held within one frame. We placed their daughter inside a woven bassinet, wrapped in white with the delicate bonnet tied beneath her chin. Her parents’ hands reached toward her from either side, gently touching and steadying her while she rested. Their hands seemed to tell the story as much as their faces did.

Two people who had built a life together were now learning how to care for someone entirely dependent on them. They were still themselves, still husband and wife, but their hands had already begun carrying new responsibilities—fastening tiny buttons, soothing late-night cries, and holding a baby who somehow made the entire world feel different.

As the sun lowered, her mother carried her closer to the rocks while the ocean moved behind them. The baby slept against her chest, unconcerned with the waves, the wind, or the beauty unfolding around her.She knew only warmth. The safety of familiar arms. The rhythm of the voice and heartbeat she had known before entering the world. These are the details that change so quietly. The way a newborn fits beneath her mother’s chin. The tiny shape of her body inside a white gown. The bonnet that will soon become too small. The ease with which her father can hold nearly all of her in his hands. At the time, the newborn days can feel endless. The nights blur together, routines change almost as soon as they begin working, and parents often wonder whether they will ever feel rested again. Then, without warning, the baby begins to grow beyond them. She holds her head a little higher. Her eyes remain open longer. The bassinet no longer feels quite so large around her. And the season everyone thought they would remember perfectly begins slipping into fragments. That is why these photographs matter.

They will bring this family back to the beginning—to the white bonnet, the woven bassinet, their dog standing beside them, and an evening when the cliffs glowed softly behind their new family. Her first summer. Her first photographs beside the sea.And two parents still discovering the beautiful new shape of their lives around her.

Planning a Santa Cruz Beach Newborn Session

A beach newborn session can be a beautiful alternative to traditional indoor photographs, especially for families who feel connected to the coast and want imagery that feels natural, spacious, and full of light. The session is guided by the baby’s comfort and the conditions at the beach. Soft layers, warm blankets, and a woven bassinet give the baby a protected place to rest while allowing the family to move naturally along the shore. Simple clothing works beautifully in this setting. White, cream, soft blue, pale gray, and natural textures complement the sand, cliffs, and ocean without competing with the tenderness of the photographs.Older siblings and family pets are also welcome. Including them allows the session to preserve the entire shape of your family during this brief season—not only the new baby, but everyone whose life has changed because of their arrival.
